The circumstances of surgical
headwear safety according to AORN
1
Several studies show that hair can be a source of bacterial organisms and potential surgical site infection
Many organizations are struggling with compliance issues related to perioperative team members who choose to wear head coverings that do not completely cover their hair
The foremost concern for all perioperative professionals should be for patient safety and for providing the cleanest surgical environment possible for all patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures
AORN recommends that surgical headwear should cover ears, scalp skin, sideburns, and nape of the neck.

A growing trend
49% of ORs have updated their policy
to require full hair coverage

Cap Survey results, n=144
3 GHX Data, Surgical Caps, March 2019
The reason is simple
Containing and covering hair with an extended cap is a reasonable safety measure that does not cause harm, but benefits patients by reducing the risk of exposure to potentially pathogenic organisms that live on the hair, skin, ears, and facial hair of perioperative team members.
The skull cap is symbolic of the surgical profession.
- American College of Surgeons
Despite the debate over hair coverage, many ORs are requiring full-hair coverage and the use of extended surgical caps is growing. Using an extended cap is much more practical than other solutions and protects the tradition of skull caps.

Fold-to-fit personalized coverage
One size doesn’t always fit all. That’s why our Extended Surgical Cap is fold-to-fit, so that individuals can lengthen or shorten the cap. This helps your staff achieve full hair coverage while still prioritizing comfort and performance.
AORN surgical headwear recommendations are to "completely covers the ears, scalp skin, sideburns, and nape of the neck ." Extending the material gives greater coverage around the head, with a similar look and feel that your staff is already accustomed to.
